Material
Wood that stands up to everyday life.
Lautio looks and feels like wood because it is solid wood. Yet it withstands moisture and the dishwasher far better than an ordinary wooden cutting board. The secret is a material called Accoya®.
Accoya is real pine – just treated differently.
What Accoya is
Pine with an improved structure.
Accoya is real pine whose properties have been improved by acetylation. The treatment changes the wood’s cell structure so that it absorbs less moisture, moves less and keeps its shape.
It is not a coating and not an impregnation. The wood is the same material all the way through – in the cut surfaces and knife marks too. Nothing is added that the wood does not already contain by nature: acetyl groups, which are present in all wood.
The Accoya® wood we use is FSC®-certified: the pine comes from responsibly managed forests, and the certification can be documented on request.
The numbers
Why it works in a cutting board.
Less moisture movement
Swelling and shrinking up to 75 % lower than untreated wood.
Durability class
The highest class in EN 350 – the same as teak.
Thickness
Planed down to 8 mm: it takes away the darker underside of the plank, uses the wood best and keeps the board light.
Plastic
No coating, no impregnation, no microplastics in your food.
In practice
The feel of a wooden board, the ease of a plastic one.
- Dishwasher safe. Moisture does not penetrate the wood the way it does ordinary pine or birch, so the board does not crack or warp in the wash.
- No plastic, no microplastics. The knife does not shed plastic particles from the board into your food.
- Thin and light. Only 8 mm thick – light to lift, easy to store, beautiful for serving.
- Knife friendly. Wood yields to the edge and keeps a knife sharp longer than glass or stone.
Comparison
How Lautio differs.
| Ordinary wooden board | Plastic board | Lautio | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dishwasher | No | Yes | Yes |
| Microplastics in food | No | Yes | No |
| Thickness and weight | Heavy, 25–40 mm | Light | Light, 8 mm |
| Shape when wet | Cracks, warps | Holds | Holds |
| Knife edge | Gentle | Dulls it | Gentle |
| For serving | Yes | Rarely | Yes |
Knife marks are part of every board. Lautio shows signs of use as wood always does – but keeps its shape.
Care in short
Wash, stand upright, use.
After washing, stand the board upright so air moves on both sides. Wood is a natural material, so a board may occasionally bow slightly – then lay it on a flat surface with the curved side up. It usually returns to shape as it dries.
Making
Made in a small workshop.
Lautio boards are made in the Steinnes Tre AS workshop on the island of Finnøy, Norway. A simple construction, a natural material and properties that are actually useful every day.
Wood without the fuss.
